Highs and Lows

2001 was year of tremendous highs and terrible lows.The high points were to come later in the year with the winning of medals by Maenan ponies and stock by our stallion, Rhosymeirch Surprise, but the lowest point of all was losing our dear old 'Grandma', Menai Carema. Poor Carema seemed to suddenly age drastically and was obviously failing. With advice from our vet we managed to keep her comfortable and after foaling she was determined to keep going for the sake of Cara, her daughter. Eventually things became too much for Carema and we sadly had to do the 'last kind thing' you do for a loyal friend. The day Carema died, I swear the look in her eyes was telling me she had done her best but could I please take over the care of her foal. She knew we would and I stayed with her to the end, glad to have the chance to say goodbye to the most loved and loyal companion I could ever have wished for. The gap she leaves in Maenan stud is emmense. Cara took to drinking milk from a bucket like she'd always fed that way and put away short feed like an adult. I think Cara must have been born old! She's beautiful, spoilt and sassy and if Carema could see her she'd be happy and satisfied with how we've kept our promise to her.
